Middle RocksSo Singapore has Pedra Branca and Malaysia has got her Middle Rocks and based on the newspapers’ publications it has shown that Malaysian fishermen now can also enter freely into the rich waters around Middle Rocks. How about South Ledge now? The court, in 15-1 majority, held that Malaysia had ownership to Middle Rocks and in a 15-1 majority, also ruled that sovereignty over South Ledge belonged to the ‘state in the territorial waters of which it is located’.   South Ledge is a rock formation and only visible at low tide. The court said it could not decide on the status of South Ledge because Malaysia and Singapore had only asked to arbitrate on the matter of sovereignty seperately for each of the three maritime features.

According to Prof. Dr. Nik Anuar Mahmud of UKM however, said a careful reading of the judgement would imply that sovereignty over South Ledge also belonged to Malaysia. This is because South Ledge is only 1.7 nautical miles south of Middle Rocks and this statement was seconded by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim. Nik Anuar also added that it is within the internationally held 12 nautical miles radius limitation to be part of Malaysian territorial waters.

Now that Malaysia is ‘positive’ that South Ledge will be theirs, Johor state government wants it clear of the maritime boundaries  to be drawn up quickly around the island and the Middle Rocks. Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman has urged the technical committee studying the implication of the ICJ’s ruling to swiftly convene a meeting and set the boundaries.

Abdul Ghani said this regarding on fishermen having problems on the territorial rights of the waters and this will be resolved once the boundaries are drawn.
