Pedra Branca          Yes, Malaysia has obtained the sovereignty of Middle Rocks according to the International Courts of Justice(ICJ) by vote of 15-1. Middle Rocks that is one of the 2 maritime features to the south of Pedra Branca consists of 2 clusters of rocks situated 0.6 nautical miles south of Pedra Branca. After nearly 2hours, Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh the Vice President of ICJ has made a decision today through the secret ballot which was decided by a vote of 16-4 in Singapore’s favour of the island Pulau Batu Puteh a.k.a Pedra Branca. Middle Rocks

Held at the Hague in the Netherlands, the ICJ has stated however that the sovereignty of South Ledge is subjected to the designated state territorial which in this case brings to an open question yet again because of the overlapping territorial waters between Malaysia and Singapore’s now, Pedra Branca. South Ledge is  a low-tide elevation ( it will submerged at high tide) further south, 2.1 nautical miles of Pedra Branca.

After the court session, Foreign Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr. Rais Yatim described the ruling as a ‘win-win” situation for the two country saying that both countries obtained something out of the 28 years old island dispute. Whereas, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin was disappointed by the ICJ’s decision taken that he is a Johorean and feels something historical from Johor and the country, Malaysia, had been taken away.

My personal opinion? Pulau Batu Puteh should have gone to Malaysia based on its geographical location but then again the thought that Malaysia could have done its job in maintaining the island Pulau Batu Puteh now Pedra Branca might have a good chance to actually have sovereignty over it instead of seldomly visiting and look around the island just to make sure it is in good condition.

There is a Malay saying, nasi sudah menjadi bubur(rice has turned into porridge), meaning that what’s done is done and nothing can be changed no more. Pulau Batu Puteh once before a neglected asset to the country leaving its neighbour island republic to keep it up and now feeling the pain of actually losing something not just the asset but the territorial waters as well that should have been theirs.

i think, the lawyers must have fought well and ICJ verdict shouldn’t be questioned anymore. what we need to do now is become good with our neighbours. everybody thinks they’re right and nobody thinks they’re wrong. everybody wants to win, nobody wants to lose. make peace. be wise. nothin could go wrong with that. cheers for Middle Rocks.
